October Client Goals Report -- You're not alone!

SYMin October Client Goals Report

""This is about the only place i can sleep deeply, " said by a visiting client on a Friday Funday after a very long and deep nap, Sometimes even a nap is important self-care."

October was a great month for change and maintenance... look to these results for how you might want to plan change for yourself...

  • Housing is the number one goal reported by our clients this month, with 14 new to and 8 maintaining housing. Bear in mind that it can be hard to keep housing. Our clients often say they aren't ready for all the responsibilities or don't really know how to go about it all. We are happy to supply cleaning supplies, small household items, and talk through challenges. It's not unusual for young homeless people to have multiple modes of housing in a single year(street, shelter, supporter housing, and couch surfing). Don't get discouraged. You can do this!

ย

  • Employment is second on the list this month with 6 reporting new employment and 8 maintaining it. Clients tell us jobs have become harder to find in the last month or so. We're glad to see so many maintaining jobs. The soft people skills needed on the job are a major emphasis of our Computer Skills Lab (and you can get started even without attending Computer Skills Lab if you want... see the Get Started button or resource link). Challenges of people issues on the job often come up in support groups. Don't let some jerk on the job take away your job that you worked hard to get. Don't give them that power... at least not until you've got an offer for a better job!

  • Sobriety goals are third on this list this month. It's a misconception that we try to dispel that all homeless are addicted but substances are readily available and can lead to unexpected challenges. On the other hand, substance use often starts as a coping mechanism or self-medication. This is why we have an All Recovery group specifically every week on Friday and often focus on self-care and coping techniques in our one-on-one guidance sessions in the Sunshine Store or on Outreach. We are all about clients taking small steps to be safer and more self-aware and aren't hung up on any definitions of sobriety.

  • The road to stability, sobriety, and having social and emotional well-being has a ton of components, each unique to you. Last month clients worked on more than 20 different components. If you haven't recognized it, having a bank account, having transportation (a bus pass counts or a bike or scooter, too), having additional support groups outside of SYMin, having a faith community, have self-care habits like a hobby, dancing with friends, etc... these can all contribute to your overall stability and well-being. Ideas for goal areas are shown on the chart of things clients are working on last month. If you are stumped on any particular item, we're here to talk and see how you want to get started. We're proud of each client's progress!ย
